A Cross-Country Journey Raises Money for Breast Cancer Research

Fundraising at any level can prove to be a great challenge but for Dave Procter – a REALTOR® at Comox Valley Re/Max – fundraising was only half the battle. The other half was cycling across Canada.

A journey that began on June 22, 2007 in Comox Valley, British Columbia ended over 7,000 kilometres later on August 29 in Nova Scotia with close to $40,000 being raised in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.

More than 70 supporters were on hand at the Comox Centre Mall to cheer Dave on as he returned to the town where it all began. Hugging his life partner Leah Reichelt, who drove a 38-foot motor home as his support team, Dave talked about the ride, the country and thanked all those who gave him encouragement along the way.

“It was a wonderful experience to see what we have here (in Canada),” said Procter. “We should appreciate what we have…start slowing down and smelling the roses instead of buying more roses.”

In an interview, Procter said he took on such a huge journey because of the people they know who have been affected by cancer.

A video crew from Re/Max International in the U.S. spent a day filming Dave and Leah. That video will be presented on Re/Max’s satellite network.

Recently Procter had an opportunity to meet and ride with seven-time Tour De France winner Lance Armstrong. A group of 100 cyclists began their day by having breakfast with Armstrong. Following breakfast, 300 riders took part in a 90-kilometre ride to benefit various cancer charities in British Columbia.
