Cyclists Raise $38,000 for B.C. Children’s Hospital

B.C. Children’s Hospital receives nearly 80,000 patients per year. For some it may be a quick visit. For others it could turn into a lengthy stay.

The hospital itself performs outstanding services with the available funding. Thanks to the generosity of some dedicated REALTORS®, children across B.C. will benefit even more.

Recently, 14 bike riders and two support staff traveled 256 kilometers from Salmon Arm to Osoyoos. Along the way they stopped at 12 Re/Max offices to collect pledges. There was also a stop at a Re/Max brokers meeting in Kelowna where $3,000 was raised.

The bike-a-thon raised $38,000, and the goal is to collect a total of $50,000.

“This was a huge feat for us. We’re not professional cyclists but a group of colleagues and friends who want to give back to our communities,” said Heidi Lussi, a REALTOR® with Re/Max in Vernon and organizer of the bike-a-thon.

“When we heard there was a Re/Max broker-owner’s meeting being held at The Grand Hotel in Kelowna, we carried our bikes into The Grand and ‘crashed’ this meeting – walking out with almost $3,000 in donations!” said Lussi. “They were all very gracious and supportive – it was great.”

Sixty per cent of the amount raised will go towards research in childhood diseases, 23 per cent will go towards specialized equipment such as incubators and cardiac monitors, and10 per cent goes towards specific endowments and designations. A further seven per cent will support health promotion and education.
