Each month for the past two years, a group of REALTORS® and staff from Sutton–Premier Realty have volunteered at the Surrey Food Bank. They sort stacks of canned goods during four-hour shifts. Volunteers, like those from Sutton–Premier Realty, allow the food bank to save on staff costs so they can instead focus their funds and energy on sourcing nutritious items for those in need.

“Our office got involved because it’s a very worthy cause,” said REALTOR® Shirley Whitters, a frequent volunteer. “We remain dedicated to this project because it feels good to know that we are helping people who are struggling to get back on their feet and are in need of some support.”

Typically, Sutton–Premier Realty sends a team of 10 people, who work from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. They enjoy a sense of comradery and the satisfaction of making a direct and personal difference in the community. Organizers have found it is quite easy to gather several volunteers each month, despite the time commitment.

Shirley notes that this type of volunteer work is a great team-builder for the office and one she highly recommends to other businesses and social groups.

Sutton–Premier Realty also holds multiple fundraisers throughout the year for the Surrey Christmas Bureau.

The Surrey Food Bank feeds an estimated 14,000 people per month. In 2016, the non-profit provided 54,838 food hampers to families living in Surrey and North Delta. In addition, it provides support for recovery houses, safe houses, shelters, youth centres, specialty food banks and soup kitchens.
