Following  the news Sussex, N.B.’s major employer would be closing, the Saint John Real Estate Association (SJREA) decided the town’s food bank and outreach centre would be the ideal recipient of a $3,200 donation.

The money was raised from a silent auction at the New Brunswick Real Estate Association‘s (NBREA) annual general meeting. With Saint John being the host city, the SJREA chose the Sussex Sharing Club as the recipient of the money.

“The town had been hit hard by the loss of many jobs,” said SJREA president Sheila Henry, referencing Sussex’s potash mine closure resulting in 430 lost jobs. “Kari McBride (president of NBREA) and myself went to present the cheque. It was an experience to tour the facilities and see the multiple purposes this club fulfills from food to clothing, to school supplies and to school food programs.”

Last year, the Sussex Sharing Club served 2199 adults, 1651 children and supplied 71,743 meals to those in need.
