REALTORS® in Ottawa Flex Their Homebuilding Muscles for Habitat for Humanity

On September 24, 2014, the REALTORS Care® Committee, President, President-Elect and staff of the Ottawa Real Estate Board (OREB) participated in a Habitat for Humanity Build on behalf of the Ontario REALTORS Care® Foundation.

This year, Habitat is building four homes (two semi-detached buildings) in Orléans on Nantes Street which will be purchased by four hard-working, low-income families with interest-free, long-term mortgages. These homes are being built beside the three homes (a bungalow and a double) that were completed last year, thanks to the support of hundreds of volunteers, sponsors, suppliers and tradespeople.

As part of a commitment to improving the community we live in, the Committee has opted to participate in a Habitat build day each year, using the funds donated from the previous year. Last year, REALTORS® and staff helped to build the exterior walls of one above mentioned semi-detached homes.

“It was a great experience to participate in the Habitat for Humanity build on Nantes. In addition to OREB providing some financial support, our REALTORS Care® Committee members enjoyed the rewarding challenge of helping construct the homes on our build day,” says Randy Oickle, President of the Ottawa Real Estate Board. “This year, our tasks were to help install all the insulation and the vapour barrier on the second floor of the first set of semi-detached homes.

Since 1993, Habitat for Humanity (National Capital Region) has built 43 homes in the nation’s capital, completed nine renovations and housed more than 50 families. Together, they are giving families a hand up, not a hand out.

“We’re really happy to play a small part in providing these four deserving families with safe, decent, and affordable housing,” said Oickle. “I feel satisfied that we helped make a difference in the lives of these families.”
