ASR Volunteers Landscape for Habitat for Humanity Saskatoon

A collection of the Association of Saskatchewan REALTORS®‘ (ASR) staffers, board members, and friends were on-site last week at a west-side Saskatoon Habitat for Humanity build. Fence building and fill/gravel placement were the order of the day for the nine-person volunteer crew, adding up to 72 people-hours of hard labour in one sweaty Saturday.

Several ASR board members were on post-hole drilling duty for the better part of the day, and business dress was exchanged for hard hats, work jeans and steel-toed boots. “It’s obviously nice to see friends and colleagues giving back to your community,” commented Len Wassill, President of the ASR and lead post-hole driller, “but it’s particularly nice to see a range of ages and capabilities coming together and making a project like this happen.”

There was a much larger crowd at the earth-moving post, where what seemed to be a mountain of fill, generously peppered with stones of all sizes, was moved by wheelbarrow from one end of the site to the other. Loading the barrows and picking rocks was a grueling task and many muscles, previously unused to this degree, made their existence known to the volunteers. “I think I am going to remember this day not only due to its positive memories of great teamwork,” continued Wassill, “but for the pain I might feel tomorrow!”

ASR vigorously supports housing and shelter-related charities and events as part of their continuing REALTORS Care® and Quality of Life mandates. Habitat for Humanity has long been a recipient of ASR support in the form of fund raising, but this was the first time ASR volunteers provided people-hours and brute strength at a build. ASR sends a big thank you to the site/project supervisor, Omar, and his assistant, Ken, who really knew what they were doing and were excellent instructors.
