REALTORS® in Saskatchewan Support Battlefords and Area Sexual Assault Centre (BASAC)

The Association of Saskatchewan REALTORS® (ASR) is pleased to report that the $5,000 grant, funded by the ASR Quality of Life Legacy and awarded to BASAC in April, has been used to fund their continuing Girl Power program.

On October 15, 2014, ASR representatives and others, including Mayor Ian Hamilton, and MLA Herb Cox, were on-site at BASAC to take part in a session from the Girl Power program. Nicole Whitton, Executive Director of BASAC explains, “Girl Power is a 10 week program for adolescent girls between the ages of 9 and 12 years, and is a preventative program in that it introduces girls to concepts and skills prior to difficult issues typically faced by teens. This empowering program is aimed at lifting the confidence of adolescent girls by helping them to understand media images and social expectations of women in the world today.”

“Wow, what an eye-opener,” said Battlefords REALTOR®, Al White. “As an adult male with a totally different perspective, being here this morning has given me a glimpse into what must be a very scary and difficult time for these young women.”

According to Chris Guérette, ASR CEO, “We could not have been more pleased with how the grant money was utilized. Being here today helped every one of us, including some very manly men, experience just what these girls are up against. If we can help these young women be strong, they in turn, will strengthen their community and society.”

The Quality of Life Legacy initiative awards grants to six community organizations from different regions of the province on an annual basis. The initiative promotes the five principles of supporting shelter-related services; enhancing environmental sustainability; supporting public education on the importance of private property rights; promoting safer neighborhoods; and enhancing community development and better opportunities for “at risk” populations and/or disadvantaged citizens.

The Legacy Grant Program will be receiving applications for 2015, starting in October 2014. More information can be found here. Any charitable organization in Saskatchewan supporting the Quality of Life in Saskatchewan’s principles listed above will be encouraged to apply.
