Shayne Fedosenko grew up on the Sooke River. One of his first jobs was working for a salmon hatchery where he often walked along feeder creeks saving fish that were stuck.

The fishing industry is so important to his town, that keeping a healthy population is vital for the economy. That’s why the REALTOR® with Maxxam Realty recently decided to donate thousands of dollars of his commission to help purchase the Pemberton Pool.

“Salmon stocks aren’t getting any better, so anything I can do to help, I will,” he said. “I know how important it is to the area, not just economically, but ecologically, and how hard those volunteers work.”

The $1.2-million Pemberton Pool was designed to boost coho and chinook salmon brood stocks.

Fedosenko was awarded by the Capital Regional District for his generosity, something he said he was not expecting.

“I was genuinely surprised. To be given the award by (the director of the Capital Regional District) was a nice honour. I know he’s an environmentally-conscious guy and wants salmon to thrive here,” Fedosenko said.

He said it’s important for REALTORS® to give back when they can, to a cause they care about.

“The more you can help out the community, even with little things, the better it makes your town, your image and our industry look. Helping someone gives you a warm and fuzzy feeling.”
