More than 100 people a day rely on the Rainbow Kitchen in Victoria for a tasty, nutritious meal. The kitchen gets a lot of use with more than 36,000 meals served in a year.

After a while, appliances broke down and needed repair. The roof leaked. Cupboard doors would fall off the hinges. With a majority of the community kitchen’s resources going to rent, utilities and purchasing groceries, upkeep got pushed to the backburner.

That’s why some kind-hearted REALTORS® at the Victoria Real Estate Board wanted to help by completing a “radical renovation” of their space.

For their time and effort, the VREB community relations team was recently awarded the HeroWork Golden Hammer award.

HeroWork is a charity that renovates other charities in a way that saves the recipient 75-80% of the value of the renovation, their website states.

“This is the second year we’ve chosen HeroWork as our main funding recipients,” said Sandi-Jo Ayers, Chair of the VREB Community Relations Committee. “We love working with HeroWork – the reason for that is that it is all about building community – they tie in local businesses, they tie in the stakeholders and they bring together the whole community.”
